Terms of Use
Key points: YomiYomi is an independent study aid, not an official JLPT service or a guarantee of an exam result. Apple’s Standard EULA governs the app license. Premium plans are purchased through Apple, with subscription status managed through RevenueCat. Openly licensed dictionary and JLPT data keep the reuse rights granted by their original licenses.
The official YomiYomi support channel is support@getyomiyomi.app, also reachable from Profile → Support in the app. See Support.
1. Acceptance
These Terms use “YomiYomi,” “we,” “us,” and “our” to refer to the operator of the YomiYomi service.
These Terms of Use (“Terms”) govern your access to YomiYomi’s study service and content. The iOS app itself is licensed under Apple’s Standard End User License Agreement (“Standard EULA”). These Terms supplement that agreement. If these Terms conflict with the Standard EULA regarding the app license, the Standard EULA controls. The separate licenses described in Section 9 continue to govern the third-party materials to which they apply.
By downloading, accessing, or using YomiYomi, you agree to these Terms and acknowledge the Privacy Policy. If you do not agree, do not use the app.
2. Eligibility
You must be at least 13 years old to use YomiYomi. If you are under the age of legal majority where you live, you may use the service only with the permission and supervision required from a parent or legal guardian. You may not use the service if applicable law prohibits you from doing so.
A parent or guardian permitting a minor to use YomiYomi should review these Terms and help the minor use the app safely and appropriately.
3. The service
YomiYomi is an iOS-native Japanese-language study app focused on JLPT-aligned learning. Depending on the current build and access tier, it may provide:
- Kanji, vocabulary, and grammar review with spaced-repetition scheduling
- Reading and listening practice
- Timed mock drills
- Streaks, goals, exam-target planning, and progress views
- Offline review support and a home-screen widget
- Optional synchronization and account recovery through Apple or Google sign-in
Features, content, limits, and platform requirements may evolve as the service is maintained.
4. Guest profiles and linked accounts
YomiYomi is guest-first. The app creates an anonymous backend account so you can study without providing your name or email. Guest progress may be tied only to the current app installation and session. It may be unrecoverable if you lose the device, reinstall, sign out, or lose access to the guest session.
You may choose to link the guest profile to Apple or Google to restore synchronized progress on another device. You are responsible for maintaining access to the selected provider account, protecting your device, and notifying us if you reasonably believe your account has been compromised.
You may not create or use accounts to evade access limits, security controls, suspension, or these Terms.
5. Educational and JLPT disclaimer
YomiYomi is a study aid only. It does not provide:
- An official JLPT examination, registration, score, result, certification, or qualification
- A guarantee that you will pass an examination or reach a particular language level
- Professional educational, immigration, employment, or legal advice
Study schedules, readiness indicators, scores, translations, explanations, and practice results are estimates and learning tools. Content may contain errors or become outdated. You are responsible for confirming official examination dates, registration rules, formats, and requirements with the relevant organizer or test center.
YomiYomi is an independent product and is not affiliated with, sponsored by, or endorsed by the Japan Foundation, Japan Educational Exchanges and Services, or the Japanese-Language Proficiency Test.
6. Acceptable use
You agree to use YomiYomi lawfully and only through the interfaces we provide. You must not:
- Access or attempt to access another learner’s account or data
- Probe, disrupt, overload, damage, or circumvent authentication, rate limits, entitlements, or security controls
- Use bots, scripts, scraping, or automated requests in a way that burdens the service or extracts restricted content
- Reverse engineer, decompile, or attempt to derive source code except to the extent applicable law or an applicable open-source license expressly permits
- Upload, transmit, or introduce malware or harmful code
- Use the service to violate law, infringe rights, or facilitate fraud
- Misrepresent affiliation with YomiYomi or its operator
These restrictions do not reduce rights expressly granted by the third-party content licenses in Section 9.
7. Free access and Premium
YomiYomi may provide different free and Premium access levels. Current in-app descriptions explain which features or daily allowances apply. N5 study and limited sampling of higher-level features may remain available without payment, but exact feature availability and fair-use limits may change.
YomiYomi offers Apple-billed subscriptions and a separate lifetime, non-consumable purchase. The available plans appear in the current paywall; annual plans are being withdrawn for new purchases, while existing annual subscriptions continue under their original terms. The paywall and Apple purchase sheet show the current localized price, billing period, and included features before confirmation.
Payment is charged to your Apple Account at confirmation. A subscription renews automatically unless it is canceled at least 24 hours before the end of the current period, and Apple may charge the account for renewal within 24 hours before that period ends. You can manage or cancel subscriptions in your Apple Account settings. An existing annual trial, when applied by Apple, becomes a paid subscription at its displayed price unless canceled before the trial ends.
A lifetime purchase means access for the supported lifetime of the relevant product or service, subject to applicable law; it is not a promise that every current or future feature will exist forever. Deleting the YomiYomi account or app does not cancel an Apple subscription. Refund requests and App Store billing issues are handled under Apple’s applicable policies.
We may change prospective pricing or plan features, but we will not take away access already owed for a completed purchase except as permitted by the purchase terms and applicable law.
8. App license and original YomiYomi material
Subject to these Terms and the Standard EULA, you receive a limited, personal, non-exclusive, non-transferable right to use YomiYomi on Apple-branded devices you own or control as allowed by Apple’s Usage Rules.
Except for third-party material described below, YomiYomi’s original software, visual design, mascot artwork, branding, original passages, questions, grammar explanations, and other original material remain protected by applicable intellectual-property rights. No ownership is transferred to you.
You may not copy, distribute, sell, sublicense, publicly display, or create derivative works from original YomiYomi material except as allowed by law, the Standard EULA, written permission, or a separately stated license.
9. Third-party and openly licensed content
YomiYomi incorporates third-party language data. That material remains governed by its own license:
- Dictionary-derived kanji and vocabulary cards incorporate JMdict and KANJIDIC2 material from the Electronic Dictionary Research and Development Group (EDRDG), licensed under CC BY-SA 4.0.
- JLPT level classifications are adapted from Tanos JLPT Resources under its stated Creative Commons Attribution terms.
- Intermediary kanji and vocabulary datasets include material from the
kanji-dataandjlpt-word-listprojects under the MIT License.
The complete attribution and license notices appear in Profile → Data Sources & Licenses.
Those licenses govern the relevant third-party material if they conflict with these Terms or the Standard EULA. Nothing in these Terms restricts copying, adaptation, redistribution, commercial reuse, or other rights that an applicable license grants. Anyone exercising those rights must comply with the applicable attribution, ShareAlike, notice, and other conditions. Third-party licensors do not endorse YomiYomi.
10. Content reports and feedback
You may voluntarily report suspected content errors through the app or send feedback through YomiYomi’s official support channel. We may use reports and feedback to investigate issues, correct content, improve the service, and respond to you. Do not include confidential information or personal data that is unnecessary for the report.
A report does not guarantee that content will be changed, and educational judgments may reasonably differ.
11. Third-party services and links
YomiYomi relies on services such as Supabase, Apple, RevenueCat, and—when you choose it—Google authentication. It may link to official JLPT resources and third-party license materials. Third parties control their own services, availability, terms, and privacy practices.
We are not responsible for third-party services or content, but this does not limit responsibilities that cannot be excluded under applicable law.
12. Availability, updates, and changes
We work to keep YomiYomi useful and reliable, but availability is not guaranteed. The app or service may be interrupted by maintenance, security work, network failure, provider outage, platform changes, or circumstances outside our reasonable control.
We may add, modify, suspend, or discontinue features or content. Where a change materially affects an active paid commitment, we will honor applicable purchase terms and mandatory consumer law.
You are responsible for installing updates needed for security, compatibility, or continued service access.
13. Suspension, termination, and account deletion
You may stop using YomiYomi at any time. You may permanently delete a guest profile or linked account through Profile → Delete guest profile / Delete account.
We may restrict or suspend access when reasonably necessary to:
- Address a material or repeated breach of these Terms
- Prevent fraud, abuse, unauthorized access, or security harm
- Comply with law or a binding legal request
- Protect the rights, safety, or operation of users, YomiYomi, or third parties
Where reasonable and legally permitted, we will provide notice or an opportunity to remedy the issue. Sections that by their nature should survive termination—including intellectual-property, third-party license, disclaimer, liability, and dispute provisions—remain effective.
Deleting an account removes active account-linked data as described in the Privacy Policy. Deleting the app alone does not necessarily delete a remote account. Account deletion does not by itself cancel billing managed by Apple.
14. Privacy
The Privacy Policy explains what data YomiYomi handles, why it is used, service providers, international transfers, retention, security, deletion, and your choices and rights.
15. Warranties and liability
The Standard EULA contains the warranty disclaimer and limitation-of-liability terms applicable to the licensed app. To the maximum extent permitted by law, YomiYomi and its service are provided “as is” and “as available,” and study content and results are not guaranteed to be error-free, complete, continuously available, or suitable for a particular examination outcome.
Nothing in these Terms excludes or limits:
- Rights or remedies that cannot lawfully be excluded
- Liability that applicable law does not permit us to limit
- Mandatory consumer guarantees
Where a remedy, warranty, or liability limitation in these Terms or the Standard EULA is not enforceable in your jurisdiction, it applies only to the greatest extent permitted there.
16. Governing law and resolving concerns
These Terms and the supplemental YomiYomi service are governed by applicable law. Nothing in these Terms deprives you of mandatory consumer protections or the right to bring a claim in a forum that applicable law makes available.
Before starting formal proceedings, please contact YomiYomi through the official support channel shown within the app or on its App Store listing with a description of the concern so we can try to resolve it informally. You and YomiYomi retain any rights to urgent relief or regulatory complaints.
The Standard EULA separately states the governing-law and forum rules applicable to the app license.
17. Changes to these Terms
We may update these Terms when the service, platform rules, providers, or law change. The revised Terms will show a new “Last updated” date at this URL.
If a change is material, we will provide reasonable additional notice in the app or by another appropriate method. Changes apply prospectively from their stated effective date unless applicable law requires otherwise. If you do not agree to revised Terms, stop using the service and delete your account.
18. General terms
- Severability: If a provision is unenforceable, it will be adjusted only as much as necessary, and the remaining provisions will continue.
- No waiver: A delay in enforcing a provision is not a waiver.
- Assignment: You may not transfer your rights under these Terms without our consent. We may transfer these Terms as part of a lawful reorganization, sale, or service transfer, subject to applicable privacy and consumer law.
- Entire agreement: These Terms, the Standard EULA, the Privacy Policy, purchase terms shown at checkout, and applicable third-party licenses form the agreement governing your use of YomiYomi. Third-party licenses control their respective materials.
